Origin
The Snowshoe is a recent breed, with its first specimens appearing in the 1960s and deriving from a Siamese cat litter that produced a kitten with white paws. This specimen was mixed with an American Shorthair cat, creating the standard we know today. The Snowshoe
is very similar to the Ragdoll cat breed that emerged in the previous decade. However, only in appearance, since the Ragdoll is a long-haired cat and the Snowshoe is a short-haired cat, in addition to the divergent origins.
Features
With a medium and elegant size, it can weigh between 3.0 kg and 5.0 kg. Its paws are short and rounded. It also has a white mark in an inverted V, which starts at the base of the snout.
One characteristic acquired from the Siamese is its striking blue eyes that stand out and convey a lightness in its gaze, and its ears are rounded. Its fur is short and satiny to the touch, and comes in various shades of lilac, blue, chocolate, brown and cream, but with a predominance of white.
The Snowshoe gets its name from its white paws, as if it had walked in the snow. It is very sociable with its owners and enjoys talking a lot, a little less than a Siamese, so be prepared for its meows of interaction. Don’t forget to place several levels so it can walk and perch; as a good hunter, it loves to observe possible “prey”.
Care
However, you should be careful when interacting with children, as they do not do well with sudden impacts, but nothing that they cannot get used to over time. Providing access to outdoor areas is very important for your cat’s mental and physical health, but it is recommended that you fence off the yard to protect your cat.
The Snowshoe does not have any problems that are unique to the breed. They are in good health without special care, but they do need weekly brushing of their fur like all cats, deworming, annual vaccinations, flea treatment and annual visits to the vet to check their health. However, if your cat shows any health variable in their daily life, it is always recommended that you monitor them.
